Tel Aviv's UNESCO listing is for buildings, not monuments: roughly four thousand International Style blocks put up by German-trained architects in the 1930s, best read along Rothschild Boulevard and around Bialik Square. Independence Hall at Rothschild 16 is where the state was declared in 1948. Old Jaffa's stone lanes and the Shuk HaPishpeshim flea market are the counterweight. The week runs Sunday to Thursday, so Sunday behaves like a Monday and the shops are busy. Buses stopped taking cash years ago, so load a Rav-Kav card or the Rav-Pass app before boarding or you simply do not travel. Plan around Shabbat, from Friday sundown to Saturday night, when intercity transport halts. Tips of around twelve percent are expected, and card machines often will not take them.

When the weather turns in Tel Aviv

Between November and March the rain comes in short violent bursts that flood the Ayalon highway rather than drizzling all day, and summer sees essentially none at all. Sarona Market's covered food hall and the Cinematheque on Ha'Arba'a Street absorb an afternoon. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art needs two hours minimum. Dizengoff Center's tangled two-building mall runs an indoor food market late in the week.

What things cost in Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv regularly ranks among the most expensive cities on earth, and it shows everywhere except the food stalls. A plate of hummus with pita and pickles is 30 to 45 shekels and a sabich around 25, but a flat white is 15 to 18 and a bar beer 30 to 40. A single metropolitan bus fare is roughly 6 shekels with ninety minutes of free transfers. Museum entry runs 50 to 60.
