The airport express bus A charges a flat fare into the centre and the C1 suburban train reaches Maria Zambrano station for less, both quicker than a taxi in August. Lunch is served from two, dinner from nine, and asking an hour early marks you out. Tipping means rounding up, not a percentage. What's actually worth your time in Málaga
The Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro castle above it sell a joint ticket and link by a walled ramp, which is the walk worth doing; the Roman theatre at the Alcazaba's foot is free and takes ten minutes. Malaga's cathedral is nicknamed La Manquita, the one-armed lady, after the south tower nobody finished, and the rooftop tour rather than the nave justifies the fee.
Málaga with kids, realistically
The centre is flat and largely pedestrianised from the Alameda up to the cathedral, so pushchairs cope easily. La Malagueta beach lies ten minutes on foot from the Picasso museum, which almost no comparable city can offer. The Museo Automovilistico and the Principia science centre suit primary ages; the Gibralfaro climb, a long stepped ramp with no shade, defeats toddlers.
When the weather turns in Málaga
Rain here is a winter event and rarely lasts a full day, but three collections sit within a few hundred metres of each other, Picasso, Carmen Thyssen and the Museo de Malaga in the Aduana palace, the last of them free to EU passport holders. Atarazanas market is roofed, as is the Muelle Uno arcade, which links the Pompidou to a cinema under cover.
