What to eat in Málaga
Espetos, sardines skewered on cane and grilled over driftwood in a beached boat, are the coast's signature, and Pedregalejo and El Palo cook them nightly from spring. Inland, order fritura malaguena, boquerones in vinegar and chilled ajoblanco. Mercado de Atarazanas, behind its Nasrid marble gateway, supplies the tapas bars, and Antigua Casa de Guardia has poured sweet Malaga wine from the barrel since 1840.
Málaga after dark
The night starts late and outdoors: Plaza de la Merced and the lanes off Calle Granada fill from ten, while Soho's bars behind the Pompidou run later. Muelle Uno stays polite and touristy. Serious clubbing sits out along the beachfront chiringuitos and the Malagueta strip. Come August the Feria hands the historic centre over by day and the fairground by night.
What's actually worth your time in Málaga
The Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro castle above it sell a joint ticket and link by a walled ramp, which is the walk worth doing; the Roman theatre at the Alcazaba's foot is free and takes ten minutes. Malaga's cathedral is nicknamed La Manquita, the one-armed lady, after the south tower nobody finished, and the rooftop tour rather than the nave justifies the fee.
Málaga's museums, and which one to pick
Museo Picasso Malaga occupies the Buenavista palace, opens every day of the week and waives admission for the last two hours each Sunday; standard entry is 13 euro. The Carmen Thyssen concentrates on nineteenth-century Andalusian painting, costs 12 and shuts Mondays. Centre Pompidou's coloured glass cube on Muelle Uno closes Tuesdays instead. Both of those go free from four on Sundays.
