When the weather turns in Cologne
Schildergasse, among the busiest shopping streets in Europe, is sheltered enough to cross the city without opening anything. Better still is Claudius Therme in the Rheinpark, thermal pools looking back over the water toward the Dom. The Ludwig, the Wallraf-Richartz and the cathedral itself stand within four minutes of one another near the Hauptbahnhof, so a soaked afternoon absorbs all three.

In a Brauhaus the Kobes tallies your drinks in pencil strokes on the beermat and frequently wants cash at the end, so do not assume a card reader exists. Never order Alt here; that is Dusseldorf's beer and the rivalry is old and unamused. Validate KVB tickets in the onboard stamper. Arriving during Carnival week means tripled room rates and a largely shut city.
Cologne's museums, and which one to pick
Museum Ludwig charges 13.50 euros, closes Mondays, and owns the third-largest Picasso holding anywhere plus a deep Pop Art floor; on the first Thursday of each month it runs until ten and drops to seven euros after five. Wallraf-Richartz covers the centuries Ludwig skips. Hardest and most necessary is the NS-Dokumentationszentrum, where prisoners' graffiti survives on the walls of the old Gestapo cells.
