What's actually worth your time in Cologne

Entering the Dom costs nothing; climbing it costs eight euros and 533 steps with no lift, and the reward is spire-level rather than a viewing room. Inside, find Gerhard Richter's 2007 south transept window, eleven and a half thousand squares of coloured glass. Hohenzollern Bridge and its padlocks are a photo stop. The twelve Romanesque churches scattered across the ring are the underrated ticket.

Cologne after dark

Zulpicher Strasse is the student artery where a Kolsch stays under three euros and nothing stops before dawn. Belgisches Viertel around Brusseler Platz is its grown-up cousin, with drinkers on the church steps until residents complain. Ehrenfeld carries the club weight, Bootshaus included. Twice a year, during Carnival and again at 11:11 on the eleventh of November, the whole city drinks outdoors.

Cologne's museums, and which one to pick

Museum Ludwig charges 13.50 euros, closes Mondays, and owns the third-largest Picasso holding anywhere plus a deep Pop Art floor; on the first Thursday of each month it runs until ten and drops to seven euros after five. Wallraf-Richartz covers the centuries Ludwig skips. Hardest and most necessary is the NS-Dokumentationszentrum, where prisoners' graffiti survives on the walls of the old Gestapo cells.

Cologne with kids, realistically

The Rheinseilbahn cable car strings across the river between the zoo and the Rheinpark from April to October, and it is the single ride children actually remember. Kolner Zoo's elephant park and the Odysseum in Kalk, a hands-on science hall, cover two more days. The Schokoladenmuseum's warm fountain aims squarely at under-tens. KVB trams take pushchairs without any argument.

When the weather turns in Cologne

Schildergasse, among the busiest shopping streets in Europe, is sheltered enough to cross the city without opening anything. Better still is Claudius Therme in the Rheinpark, thermal pools looking back over the water toward the Dom. The Ludwig, the Wallraf-Richartz and the cathedral itself stand within four minutes of one another near the Hauptbahnhof, so a soaked afternoon absorbs all three.

The month to avoid is December — around 7°C (45°F) with roughly 17 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
