The indoor circuit is the free Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras, the North Carolina Aquarium and Roanoke Island Festival Park with its Elizabeth II ship, the Wright Brothers exhibit hall, and the Scarborough Faire shops in Duck. Storms overwash NC-12, so check road status before driving south.
What first-timers get wrong in Outer Banks
Saturday is changeover day for weekly rentals and US-158 and NC-12 seize up from mid-morning; arrive Sunday if you can choose. Buy groceries in Kitty Hawk or Nags Head before heading down to Hatteras, where selection thins fast. The Hatteras to Ocracoke ferry is free and takes an hour, but the mainland ferries are paid and reservation-only. Corolla beach driving needs a permit.
Outer Banks's museums, and which one to pick
In Hatteras Village, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum costs nothing and displays salvage from the wrecks offshore, including the first-order Fresnel lens from the Cape Hatteras light.
