What things cost in Outer Banks
Wright Brothers is ten dollars per adult, card only. Climbing Bodie Island Lighthouse costs ten for adults and five for seniors and children eleven and under, sold same-day from seven in the morning, with a 260-pound and 42-inch limit. Jockey's Ridge and the Hatteras ferry are free. The weekly house rental is the entire budget; everything else is small.
What to eat in Outer Banks
Hatteras-style clam chowder is the dish that exists nowhere else: clear salty broth, no cream and no tomato, thickened only by potato. Soft-shell crabs run in spring. Duck Donuts began in the village of Duck in 2007 and fries to order. Sam and Omie's in Nags Head has fed the Oregon Inlet charter crews since 1937 and opens for breakfast.
Outer Banks after dark
There is deliberately almost none. These are rental-house islands, so the evening is a deck, a cooler and a sunset over the sound rather than a bar strip. Kill Devil Hills holds what concentration exists, including a wind-powered brewpub and a few Beach Road bars. South of Nags Head the villages go dark by ten, and Ocracoke earlier still.
What's actually worth your time in Outer Banks
Wright Brothers National Memorial charges ten dollars per person aged sixteen and up, takes cards only and refuses cash outright, and waives the fee on 19 August and 17 December. Jockey's Ridge, the tallest active dune system on the East Coast, is free and better at sunset. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is closed to climbing through 2026 for restoration, so the stripes are a photograph this year.
Outer Banks's museums, and which one to pick
In Hatteras Village, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum costs nothing and displays salvage from the wrecks offshore, including the first-order Fresnel lens from the Cape Hatteras light. Chicamacomico in Rodanthe is the most complete surviving United States Life-Saving Service station anywhere and stages the beach apparatus drill in summer. The Wright Brothers visitor centre holds a full-scale 1903 Flyer reproduction.
