Split after dark
In the palace vestibule, a domed and roofless rotunda, klapa groups sing a cappella most evenings for tips, and the acoustics do the work for free. What to eat in Split

What's actually worth your time in Split
Diocletian's Palace is no ruin behind a fence; around three thousand people live inside its walls, so you wander in for nothing and pay only for the cellars, the cathedral and the bell tower. The cathedral itself was built into Diocletian's own mausoleum and dedicated to a bishop he had executed. Marjan hill, up the steps from Varos, is free and empties out by mid-morning.
Split's museums, and which one to pick
Plan around the Mestrovic Gallery, the sculptor's own seafront villa, open Tuesday to Sunday from eight until six and closed Mondays, its ticket also opening Kastelet along the road where his walnut Life of Christ reliefs line a chapel. The Archaeological Museum, founded in 1820, holds what came out of Salona. Froggyland's 507 taxidermied frogs posed in human scenes is not a joke exhibit.
