What to eat in Split

The fish market on Kraj Sv. Marije has no flies, and locals credit the sulphur spring next door; true or not, the catch landed that morning. Pazar, the green market against the palace's east wall, handles produce. Order pasticada, beef braised in prosek with prunes over gnocchi, or arrange peka a day ahead, since it cooks for hours beneath a bell covered in embers.

What first-timers get wrong in Split

That passageway of souvenir stalls through the palace basement is free; the ticket covers only the halls on either side, and plenty of people pay without realising. Jadrolinija catamarans to Hvar and Brac sell out days ahead through July and August, so book online rather than at the window. Ferry, bus and train terminals share a single waterfront block east of the palace.

When the weather turns in Split

Storms here arrive hard and briefly rather than as drizzle, so the plan is to duck underneath. The palace substructures form a full vaulted underground street running from the Riva up to the Peristyle. Add the cathedral, the treasury and the bell tower for a dry loop entirely inside the walls. The Mestrovic Gallery and Archaeological Museum each need a bus and hold two hours.

What things cost in Split

Croatia has used the euro since 2023, so nothing is priced in kuna any more. Coffee on the Riva runs two to three euros and stays that price whether you sit one hour or five, which is the local custom. A konoba dinner with wine reaches thirty to forty a head, half a litre of Ozujsko about four, and a catamaran seat to Hvar ten to fifteen.

When to go to Split

The month to avoid is December — around 13°C (55°F) with roughly 14 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: June is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
