What's actually worth your time in Stockholm

The Vasa, a warship that capsized barely a kilometre into its 1628 maiden voyage and came up nearly intact, justifies its queue in a way little else does. Gamla Stan's Stortorget is a photo stop, and the Royal Palace guard change is longer and duller than expected. Skansen combines an open-air historical village with Nordic animals in one hillside. Fotografiska stays open unusually late.

Vasa admission is 195 SEK from October to April and 240 SEK from May to September, with under-eighteens free. Nationalmuseum asks 160 SEK but opens free to everyone on Thursdays between five and eight in the evening. Moderna Museet on Skeppsholmen shows Rauschenberg and Picasso and shuts Mondays. The Nobel Prize Museum in Gamla Stan is small for its price; Nordiska museet is the opposite.
