When the weather turns in Stockholm

Wet days push locals underground, and the blue line stations at Kungstradgarden, T-Centralen and Solna Centrum are carved and painted rock, so a day pass becomes a gallery ticket. Beyond that there is the Vasa's cavernous hall, ArkDes and Moderna Museet sharing one Skeppsholmen building, Fotografiska's late hours, and the covered arcades of PUB and Gallerian off Hotorget.

Stockholm's museums, and which one to pick

Vasa admission is 195 SEK from October to April and 240 SEK from May to September, with under-eighteens free. Nationalmuseum asks 160 SEK but opens free to everyone on Thursdays between five and eight in the evening. Moderna Museet on Skeppsholmen shows Rauschenberg and Picasso and shuts Mondays. The Nobel Prize Museum in Gamla Stan is small for its price; Nordiska museet is the opposite.

What to eat in Stockholm

Order the dagens lunch, a set plate served on weekdays until around two and priced far below the same kitchen's dinner. Meatballs arrive with lingonberry and cream sauce, but the sharper local habit is a shrimp sandwich or pickled herring on crispbread. Ostermalms Saluhall handles fish and game, Hotorgshallen the immigrant pantry. Semla buns surface around Lent and vanish afterwards.

What's actually worth your time in Stockholm

The Vasa, a warship that capsized barely a kilometre into its 1628 maiden voyage and came up nearly intact, justifies its queue in a way little else does. Gamla Stan's Stortorget is a photo stop, and the Royal Palace guard change is longer and duller than expected. Skansen combines an open-air historical village with Nordic animals in one hillside. Fotografiska stays open unusually late.

Stockholm after dark

Sodermalm carries the evening, between SoFo's bars, Kvarnen's old beer hall and Tradgarden's concrete summer yard under the Skanstull bridge. Anything above 3.5 per cent alcohol is sold only through state-run Systembolaget, which shuts at three on Saturdays and never opens Sunday, so buy in advance. Coat check is compulsory and charged at most clubs. Stureplan is the dressier, costlier end.

When to go to Stockholm

The month to avoid is December — around 1°C (34°F) with roughly 13 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
