Brisbane on a Budget: What A$110, A$250 and A$550 a Day Actually Get You

A concrete, three-tier look at daily costs in Brisbane — lodging, food, getting around and activities — built around the city’s unusual advantage: transport that costs almost nothing.

How Brisbane costs actually break down

Brisbane runs cheaper than Sydney and has one structural advantage almost no other major city shares: the flat 50-cent Translink fare means a full day of trains, ferries and buses costs a couple of dollars, however far you roam. On top of that sits a large free layer — general admission at QAGOMA, Streets Beach, the City Botanic Gardens, the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mt Coot-tha, the clifftop and bridge walks. Your daily spend is really decided by lodging and food. The tiers below are per person per day, exclude flights, and already account for GST being inside every displayed price with no tipping on top.

≈ A$110 / day — lean

A hostel bed or a share of a budget rental, bakeries and food courts plus the genuinely good cheap Asian eating around the Valley’s Chinatown and the southern suburbs, transit everywhere at 50 cents, and free sights: the gallery, the lagoon, the clifftop at sunset. Achievable outside event weeks without feeling like deprivation.

  • Sleep: hostel dorm or a share of a budget rental — roughly A$45–70.
  • Food: bakeries and food courts plus one casual meal — roughly A$35–55.
  • Transport + activities: a handful of 50-cent taps and free sights — roughly A$2–15.

≈ A$250 / day — comfortable

A mid-range hotel room or a New Farm or West End apartment split between two, cafe breakfasts and one proper restaurant dinner, ferries and trains for everything, and one paid highlight most days — the koala sanctuary, a ticketed exhibition, an evening kayak under the Story Bridge. This is the tier most couples actually travel at.

  • Sleep: mid-range hotel room or apartment, split two ways — roughly A$90–150.
  • Food: cafe breakfast plus one restaurant meal — roughly A$65–110.
  • Transport + activities: 50-cent transit plus one paid sight or tour — roughly A$30–80.

≈ A$550+ / day — generous

A Queen’s Wharf tower room, a James Street design hotel or a premium riverside apartment; restaurant meals without watching the bill; rideshare when the ferry does not suit; and the premium experiences — a Moreton Island day tour, a scenic flight over the bay, a QPAC show, a long lunch on Tamborine Mountain. At this tier the constraint is your calendar, not Brisbane’s prices.

  • Sleep: premium hotel or riverside apartment, split two ways — roughly A$175–300.
  • Food: restaurant meals and drinks — roughly A$140–230.
  • Transport + experiences: rideshare plus an island day, a flight or a show — roughly A$130–290.

Where the free value is

QAGOMA’s general admission, Streets Beach, the City Botanic Gardens, the Brisbane Botanic Gardens and lookout at Mt Coot-tha, the Kangaroo Point clifftop walk and every river bridge crossing cost nothing — and the 50-cent CityCat turns the travel between them into the sightseeing rather than the overhead. Spend where Brisbane genuinely earns it: one island day, one great dinner, one thing you would not do at home.
