Singapore on a Budget: What S$110, S$250 and S$550 a Day Actually Get You
A concrete, three-tier look at daily costs in Singapore — lodging, food, getting around and activities — so you can plan a realistic budget instead of guessing.
How Singapore costs actually break down
Singapore’s cost structure is lopsided in a way that is genuinely good news for careful travellers: beds are expensive and almost everything else is optional. Hawker meals run S$5–10, MRT rides a dollar or two, and the light shows, Botanic Gardens, temples and mosques are free. So your daily number is set almost entirely by where you sleep and how many paid attractions you add. The tiers below are per person per day, exclude flights, and already fold in the service charge and GST that restaurants add on top of menu prices.
≈ S$110 / day — lean
A capsule hostel or budget hotel bed in Little India, Bugis or Chinatown, hawker centres for every meal, the MRT everywhere, and a free-first sightseeing plan: the bay light shows, the Botanic Gardens, the temples and mosques, the Southern Ridges, Sentosa’s beaches via the boardwalk. This is the easiest expensive city in the world to do cheaply, and it does not feel like deprivation.
- Sleep: capsule hostel or budget hotel bed — roughly S$45–80.
- Food: hawker centres and kopitiams — roughly S$20–35.
- Transport + activities: MRT plus mostly free sights — roughly S$5–25.
≈ S$250 / day — comfortable
A mid-range or boutique shophouse hotel shared as a double, hawker food plus one proper restaurant or bar stop, the MRT with the occasional Grab, and one headline paid attraction most days — the conservatories one day, the Night Safari another. This is the tier most couples actually travel at here.
- Sleep: mid-range hotel, per person sharing — roughly S$100–175.
- Food: hawker plus one restaurant meal or bar round — roughly S$50–90.
- Transport + activities: MRT and Grab plus one paid attraction — roughly S$35–85.
≈ S$550+ / day — generous
A Marina Bay tower or a Sentosa resort, restaurant and rooftop-bar meals without reading the “++”, Grab door to door, and the full attraction stack — Universal Studios, the cable car, a private food tour. At this tier the constraint is your calendar rather than the prices, and the single biggest line remains the room: premium rooms here run several hundred dollars a night before the F1 weekend or a holiday period pushes them higher.
- Sleep: Marina Bay or Sentosa premium, per person sharing — roughly S$225–450.
- Food: restaurants, rooftop bars and cocktails — roughly S$130–250.
- Transport + experiences: Grab everywhere plus premium attractions and tours — roughly S$140–280.
Where the free value is
The nightly light show at the Supertree Grove and the water-and-light show on the bayfront, the Supertrees themselves at ground level, the UNESCO-listed Botanic Gardens, the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Sultan Mosque, the Southern Ridges walk, Changi’s Jewel waterfall, and every hawker centre as free theatre before you have even ordered. Spend where it counts — a good room and the two or three tickets you genuinely care about — and let the city’s public face do the rest of the entertaining.
