What's actually worth your time in Banff
Moraine Lake has been closed to private vehicles since 2023, so the only ways in are the Parks Canada shuttle, a Roam bus, a bicycle or a paid operator. Lake Louise's lot fills before sunrise and charges by the hour. Vermilion Lakes, five minutes from town, gives the best free sunrise in the valley. The gondola up Sulphur Mountain duplicates a trail you can walk in ninety minutes.
What to eat in Banff
Alberta beef, elk and bison carry the menus: the Bison on Bear Street, Chuck's for steak, Park Distillery for trout and its own spirits. Bear Street Tavern handles the post-hike pizza. Wild Flour bakes the morning cinnamon buns. The Lake Agnes Tea House, a 3.5-kilometre climb above Lake Louise with no road to it, serves tea and soup and prefers cash for good reason.
When the weather turns in Banff
Bad weather here often means snow rather than rain, and the answer holds either way: sit in the Upper Hot Springs while it falls on you. Otherwise the Whyte Museum, the tunnels at Cave and Basin, the Banff Park Museum, and the interpretive centre at the gondola summit. Canmore, twenty minutes down the valley, has the Elevation Place climbing wall and pool.
Banff after dark
A town of under nine thousand supports a wildly disproportionate bar scene because most of the workforce is young, seasonal and international. The Dancing Sasquatch and Hoodoo run late, High Rollers pairs bowling lanes with a long tap list, and the Rose and Crown does the pub version. Alberta stops service at two. On clear nights the alternative is stars, since this is a Dark Sky Preserve.
Banff with kids, realistically
Park entry is free for anyone seventeen and under. Johnston Canyon's catwalks bolted into the gorge thrill school-age children and defeat strollers completely. The Upper Hot Springs pool is warm enough to enjoy in falling snow. Lake Minnewanka runs a boat cruise. Elk wander into town during the autumn rut and are genuinely dangerous; thirty metres is a required distance, not a suggestion.
