What's actually worth your time in Ho Chi Minh City

The War Remnants Museum is why most people come and it is deliberately hard going, with the Requiem photography gallery upstairs the strongest room in it. Reunification Palace stands frozen as it was in April 1975, basement war room included. Notre-Dame Cathedral has been under scaffolding for years, so it is a facade photograph only. Cu Chi is a half-day trip, with the Ben Duoc tunnels quieter than Ben Dinh.

Ho Chi Minh City's museums, and which one to pick

The Fine Arts Museum occupies a 1929 mansion that had the first lift in Saigon, and its lacquer rooms and propaganda posters outrank the paintings hung around them. The FITO Museum on Hoang Du Khuong reconstructs traditional medicine across six wooden floors and hands you tea at the end. The Ao Dai Museum sits far out toward Thu Duc and only repays a specific interest in the garment.

Ho Chi Minh City after dark

Bui Vien turns pedestrian on Friday and Saturday nights and becomes competing sound systems under neon, which is either the entire point or exactly what to avoid. Rooftop bars in the Bitexco tower and Landmark 81 price themselves accordingly. Thao Dien across the river in District 2 is where residents and expatriates drink quietly. The city runs later than Hanoi and enforcement here is noticeably looser.

What to eat in Ho Chi Minh City

Com tam, broken rice with a grilled pork chop and fried egg, is the local breakfast and barely exists up north. Banh mi here is sweeter and far more heavily loaded, with Huynh Hoa on Le Thi Rieng running a permanent queue. Banh xeo at 46A Dinh Cong Trang arrives the size of a dinner plate with a tray of leaves for wrapping. District 5 is the Chinese quarter for noodle soups.

Ho Chi Minh City with kids, realistically

Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens dates from 1865 and sits centrally, cheap and heavily shaded, which matters more in this heat than the animal collection does. Suoi Tien on the eastern edge is a Buddhist-themed amusement park with dragon statues and a crocodile lake that bewilders children in the best way. Traffic is the hazard: hold hands, cross at constant pace, and use the footbridges near Ben Thanh.

When to go to Ho Chi Minh City
