What's actually worth your time in Ho Chi Minh City
The War Remnants Museum is why most people come and it is deliberately hard going, with the Requiem photography gallery upstairs the strongest room in it. Reunification Palace stands frozen as it was in April 1975, basement war room included. Notre-Dame Cathedral has been under scaffolding for years, so it is a facade photograph only. Cu Chi is a half-day trip, with the Ben Duoc tunnels quieter than Ben Dinh.
Ho Chi Minh City's museums, and which one to pick
The Fine Arts Museum occupies a 1929 mansion that had the first lift in Saigon, and its lacquer rooms and propaganda posters outrank the paintings hung around them. The FITO Museum on Hoang Du Khuong reconstructs traditional medicine across six wooden floors and hands you tea at the end. The Ao Dai Museum sits far out toward Thu Duc and only repays a specific interest in the garment.
What first-timers get wrong in Ho Chi Minh City
Phone snatching from moving motorbikes is the real risk here, more so than elsewhere in Vietnam, so do not stand at the kerb navigating on a handset. Learn the district numbers, since addresses mean nothing without them and Districts 1, 3 and 5 are where you will spend your time. Book Grab or Xanh SM instead of hailing. Tan Son Nhat airport is close, but the road to it is not.
When the weather turns in Ho Chi Minh City
From May to November the rain arrives most afternoons, falls hard for an hour and leaves flooded intersections behind it. Locals pull over and wait under an awning rather than push through. Saigon Centre with Takashimaya inside, Vincom Center on Le Thanh Ton and Diamond Plaza are the air-conditioned refuges. The War Remnants Museum and Reunification Palace are both indoors and take three hours between them.
What things cost in Ho Chi Minh City
Com tam from a pavement stall costs 40,000 to 60,000 dong and a loaded banh mi 25,000 to 60,000 depending on the shop. Bottled Saigon beer on a plastic stool is around 20,000 to 30,000, while a rooftop cocktail costs many times that. The War Remnants Museum charges 40,000 and Reunification Palace a little more. A Grab car across District 1 rarely exceeds 60,000.
