What first-timers get wrong in Dubrovnik
A Dubrovnik Pass costs barely more than the walls ticket alone while adding city museums and Libertas buses, so buying the walls separately is usually a mistake. The walls run one way with no re-entry. The tourist board publishes a cruise-arrival forecast, so check it and climb up on a low-ship morning. Decline the currency conversion that Euronet cash machines push on you.
Dubrovnik after dark
Two Buza bars are literally holes cut through the sea wall, cash only, plastic cups, no music, with the sunset doing everything else. Revelin runs as a club inside a sixteenth-century fortress, which is about as Dubrovnik as clubbing becomes. The Summer Festival, staged since 1950, fills fortresses and squares with plays and concerts from mid-July to late August. Cruise crowds thin after six.
What things cost in Dubrovnik
The most expensive stop on the Adriatic makes no secret of it. Expect north of thirty euros for the walls, roughly twenty-seven return on the Srd cable car, and forty to sixty a head for dinner inside the old town. Coffee runs three to four, beer five to six. Sleeping and eating out in Gruz or Lapad rather than within the walls cuts the daily total sharply.
Dubrovnik with kids, realistically
Lokrum, fifteen minutes by boat from the old port, is the family answer: free-roaming peacocks, shade, and a small warm saltwater lake called the Dead Sea that suits weak swimmers. The walls punish young children instead, offering steps, no shade and few exits once begun. Old town is stairs end to end, so a stroller becomes luggage. The Srd cable car is a three-minute win.
When the weather turns in Dubrovnik
This city is badly set up for rain; the walls shut in high wind and the Stradun becomes a shallow river, which is why the arcaded Sponza Palace atrium fills with people sheltering. The indoor run is short but strong, with Rector's Palace, the Franciscan cloister, the cathedral treasury and War Photo Limited within four minutes of each other. The Red History Museum in Gruz adds an hour.
