The walls run one way with no re-entry. The tourist board publishes a cruise-arrival forecast, so check it and climb up on a low-ship morning. Decline the currency conversion that Euronet cash machines push on you.

When the weather turns in Dubrovnik

This city is badly set up for rain; the walls shut in high wind and the Stradun becomes a shallow river, which is why the arcaded Sponza Palace atrium fills with people sheltering. The indoor run is short but strong, with Rector's Palace, the Franciscan cloister, the cathedral treasury and War Photo Limited within four minutes of each other. The Red History Museum in Gruz adds an hour.

What things cost in Dubrovnik

The most expensive stop on the Adriatic makes no secret of it. Expect north of thirty euros for the walls, roughly twenty-seven return on the Srd cable car, and forty to sixty a head for dinner inside the old town. Coffee runs three to four, beer five to six. Sleeping and eating out in Gruz or Lapad rather than within the walls cuts the daily total sharply.
