What first-timers get wrong in Verona
The VeronaCard runs about €27 for 24 hours and roughly €35 for 48, and pays off only across three or more sites. Casa di Giulietta still demands its own timed reservation on top of the card, and the Torre dei Lamberti lift costs extra either way. Opera tickets are non-refundable though weather-postponed, and unnumbered stone steps mean bringing a cushion.
Verona after dark
From mid-June to early September the opera festival sets the clock: performances begin around nine, end near midnight, and the crowd drifts into Piazza Bra afterwards. Little candles lit across the stone terraces before curtain are the tradition worth arriving early for. Off-season Verona is early and quiet, with wine bars under the Via Sottoriva arcades and students drinking across the river in Veronetta.
What things cost in Verona
Reduced Arena admission is €9 for over-sixties, students, and groups. Opera stalls sell to under-thirties near €30, while a family stand seat for a child under fourteen is about €2.50. A plate of bigoli in a Veronetta trattoria costs a fraction of the same dish on Piazza Bra. Valpolicella by the glass stays cheap standing at the counter and doubles at a table.
Verona with kids, realistically
Distances are short and mostly flat along the Adige, so a stroller works at street level, though the Arena's stone tiers and the Torre dei Lamberti stairs do not. Children old enough to sit through an opera get family stand seats from roughly €2.50 for under-fourteens. Giardino Giusti's clipped maze and the swallowtail battlements of Ponte Scaligero suit the younger ones better.
When the weather turns in Verona
Castelvecchio lets you cross a fortress under cover and the Scarpa route inside runs a solid two hours. Palazzo Maffei is compact and dry. Arena performances are postponed or cancelled outright in rain, never moved indoors, so a wet evening needs a fallback: the Duomo, San Zeno's crypt, and the long shopfront arcade of Via Mazzini absorb the rest.
