Picture-menu terraces ringing the Markt are the classic trap; two streets back the same mussels cost a third less. Service is already included, so round up rather than adding ten percent. Public toilets typically charge fifty cents.

What's actually worth your time in Bruges

The Belfry dominates the Markt and its 366-step climb is genuinely worth the fifteen euros, though entry is capacity-capped and the queue forms by ten. The Burg square next door, the Basilica of the Holy Blood and the walled Begijnhof cost nothing and reward more time. Minnewater and the Rozenhoedkaai bend are photo stops; skip the horse carriages and walk the Groenerei instead.

Bruges's museums, and which one to pick

Groeningemuseum is the one that matters: Van Eyck's Madonna with Canon van der Paele and Bosch's Last Judgement, a collection small enough to finish properly in ninety minutes. Sint-Janshospitaal shows Memling's Shrine of Saint Ursula inside a medieval hospital ward. The Church of Our Lady keeps Michelangelo's Madonna and Child, the only sculpture to leave Italy in his lifetime. Municipal museums shut Mondays.

Bruges with kids, realistically

The centre is small enough that no child needs a bus, but the cobbles punish light strollers, so bring one with real wheels. Half-hour canal boats suit any age; the Belfry's narrow spiral does not, and small children are turned away. Choco-Story and the Frietmuseum are unashamedly commercial and work anyway for six to twelve. Boudewijn Seapark, out at Sint-Michiels, fills a whole afternoon.

When the weather turns in Bruges

Rain is normal in coastal Flanders and the good indoor stops cluster helpfully: Groeningemuseum and Sint-Janshospitaal sit five minutes apart along the Dijver, so one wet morning covers both. The Halve Maan tour is warm and ends with a glass in your hand. Historium on the Markt is theatrical rather than scholarly but keeps children dry. Failing everything, settle in at 't Brugs Beertje.
