Bruges after dark

Bruges empties when the day-trip coaches pull out around six, and that emptiness is the appeal. Evenings mean bars, not clubs: De Garre, down its alley off Breidelstraat, serves a house tripel it will not pour you more than three of, and Cafe Vlissinghe has been open since 1515. Kitchens stop near half past nine. For a club you take the train to Ghent.

What to eat in Bruges

What first-timers get wrong in Bruges

Trains from Brussels take an hour, but the station sits twenty minutes south of the Markt, and walking in through 't Zand beats paying for a taxi. Picture-menu terraces ringing the Markt are the classic trap; two streets back the same mussels cost a third less. Service is already included, so round up rather than adding ten percent. Public toilets typically charge fifty cents.

When the weather turns in Bruges

Rain is normal in coastal Flanders and the good indoor stops cluster helpfully: Groeningemuseum and Sint-Janshospitaal sit five minutes apart along the Dijver, so one wet morning covers both. The Halve Maan tour is warm and ends with a glass in your hand. Historium on the Markt is theatrical rather than scholarly but keeps children dry. Failing everything, settle in at 't Brugs Beertje.

What things cost in Bruges

Transport costs nothing because everything is walkable, which offsets the rest. A 0.25-litre Brugse Zot runs about five euros, a pot of moules-frites twenty-eight to thirty-two on the Markt and noticeably less off it. The Belfry is fifteen euros, the Groeningemuseum around the same, the brewery tour sixteen. A Musea Brugge card starts paying for itself at the third museum.

When to go to Bruges

The month to avoid is January — around 7°C (45°F) with roughly 14 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: June is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
