What first-timers get wrong in Hoi An

Tailoring needs time rather than money: allow three days and two fittings, and treat anyone promising a suit overnight with suspicion. The old town bars motor vehicles during set hours daily, which is why everybody walks. Carry the heritage ticket with you rather than leaving it at the hotel. What's actually worth your time in Hoi An

A single ancient town ticket, around 120,000 dong, covers entry to a handful of the heritage houses, assembly halls and the Japanese Covered Bridge, and inspectors do check it at the bridge itself. That bridge was fully dismantled and rebuilt between 2022 and 2024, a restoration criticised for leaving it looking too new. My Son, the Cham brick sanctuary, is an hour west and best taken at opening time.

Hoi An's museums, and which one to pick

The small town museums are covered by that same heritage ticket and each takes about twenty minutes: the Museum of Trade Ceramics on Tran Phu displays shards from the shipwrecks that made this port rich, while the Sa Huynh Culture museum covers burial jars roughly two thousand years old. Separately, the Precious Heritage Museum on Phan Boi Chau shows Rehahn's portraits of Vietnam's ethnic minorities and charges nothing at the door.

Hoi An with kids, realistically

The town is flat and largely traffic-free during the day, so children can cycle, and hotels lend bikes with child seats at no charge. An Bang beach is a four-kilometre ride and has lifeguards, while Cua Dai has lost most of its sand to erosion and sits behind sandbags. Basket-boat rides through the Cam Thanh coconut palms cost little and delight under-tens. Lantern-making workshops run about ninety minutes.

When the weather turns in Hoi An

October and November bring genuine flooding rather than mere rain: the Thu Bon rises over the riverside streets, shopkeepers move stock upstairs, and boats replace bicycles on Bach Dang. Plan around that season instead of through it. Otherwise a wet day means a cooking class, a fitting at one of the several hundred tailors, or the covered central market. Most heritage houses are open-sided and cold in a downpour.

When to go to Hoi An

The month to avoid is August — around 34°C (93°F) with roughly 18 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: March is the sweet spot, August the month most people skip.
