What's actually worth your time in Hoi An

A single ancient town ticket, around 120,000 dong, covers entry to a handful of the heritage houses, assembly halls and the Japanese Covered Bridge, and inspectors do check it at the bridge itself. That bridge was fully dismantled and rebuilt between 2022 and 2024, a restoration criticised for leaving it looking too new. My Son, the Cham brick sanctuary, is an hour west and best taken at opening time.

Hoi An after dark

Evenings here are the lantern-lit riverfront, boat sellers pressing paper candles on passers-by along the Thu Bon, and the An Hoi night market across the footbridge. On the fourteenth day of each lunar month the town cuts its electric lighting for the lantern festival, and the effect really is different from an ordinary night. Bars cluster on the far bank, and most of the old town is quiet by eleven.

What things cost in Hoi An

Cao lau costs 30,000 to 50,000 dong at a market stall and roughly double at a riverside table with a view. Bicycle hire is 30,000 to 50,000 a day and a motorbike about four times that. The heritage ticket is a one-off 120,000. A tailored linen shirt runs a few hundred thousand dong, while a wool suit is a several-million-dong decision made in an afternoon.

Hoi An's museums, and which one to pick

The small town museums are covered by that same heritage ticket and each takes about twenty minutes: the Museum of Trade Ceramics on Tran Phu displays shards from the shipwrecks that made this port rich, while the Sa Huynh Culture museum covers burial jars roughly two thousand years old. Separately, the Precious Heritage Museum on Phan Boi Chau shows Rehahn's portraits of Vietnam's ethnic minorities and charges nothing at the door.

What to eat in Hoi An

Cao lau exists nowhere else: thick chewy noodles said to require water from the Ba Le well and lye from Cham island ash, served nearly dry with pork and greens. White rose dumplings come from a single family workshop that supplies almost every restaurant in town. Banh Mi Phuong on Phan Chu Trinh became famous through Anthony Bourdain and the queue has never recovered from it.

When to go to Hoi An

The month to avoid is August — around 34°C (93°F) with roughly 18 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: March is the sweet spot, August the month most people skip.
