What first-timers get wrong in Hong Kong
Buy an Octopus card, which pays for MTR, buses, ferries and most convenience stores. Taxis are colour-coded by territory: red works urban Hong Kong and Kowloon, green covers only the New Territories, blue only Lantau, and a red cab will refuse a New Territories fare. Many still take cash only. Escalator convention is stand right, walk left, observed strictly. Restaurants add ten percent service.
What's actually worth your time in Hong Kong
The Star Ferry crosses the harbour for a few dollars and beats every paid boat tour on the water. Victoria Peak is best reached by the tram, though the Sky Terrace ticket buys little that the free Lions Pavilion viewpoint does not already give you. The Symphony of Lights, staged nightly at eight, is widely regarded as a letdown. Dragon's Back is a two-hour ridge walk that ends at a swimmable beach.
Hong Kong's museums, and which one to pick
Permanent exhibitions at the government museums cost nothing: the Hong Kong Story at the Museum of History is free, and the building closes Tuesdays and for the first two days of Chinese New Year. M+ at West Kowloon charges admission, holds the Sigg collection of Chinese contemporary art, and carries an LED facade legible from across the harbour. Tai Kwun, the converted Central Police Station, mixes free galleries with the surviving cells.
Hong Kong with kids, realistically
Ocean Park combines a cable car over the headland with pandas and a serious aquarium, and it suits older children better than Disneyland, which is the smallest in the world and finishable in a day. The Ngong Ping 360 cable car runs 5.7 kilometres to the Big Buddha with a glass-floor cabin option. Every MTR station has lifts, but escalators are fast and interchange crowds are relentless.
When the weather turns in Hong Kong
Rain here arrives with a signal system: an amber rainstorm warning is a nuisance, while black rain or typhoon signal 8 closes offices, shops and ferries outright and you simply stay indoors. Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui runs 700 metres of shops along the waterfront, and Central's elevated walkways link IFC to Admiralty without a street crossing. The free government museums and Tai Kwun cover the rest.
