Lan Kwai Fong drinks in the street on Fridays because the bars are too small to hold anyone. SoHo above it is reached by the Mid-Levels escalator, which runs downhill until about ten in the morning and uphill for the rest of the day. Wan Chai keeps the older, later venues. The MTR stops near one, but taxis are plentiful and cheap given what the rents cost.
What to eat in Hong Kong
Dim sum is a morning and lunchtime meal rather than dinner, and the trolley houses stop serving by mid-afternoon. Roast goose is the local bird rather than duck, with Kam's Roast and the Sham Tseng village shops the usual argument. Cha chaan tengs pour milk tea strained through a cloth sock beside macaroni soup. Only a handful of licensed dai pai dong street kitchens survive, mostly in Central and Sham Shui Po.
What first-timers get wrong in Hong Kong
Buy an Octopus card, which pays for MTR, buses, ferries and most convenience stores. Taxis are colour-coded by territory: red works urban Hong Kong and Kowloon, green covers only the New Territories, blue only Lantau, and a red cab will refuse a New Territories fare. Many still take cash only. Escalator convention is stand right, walk left, observed strictly. Restaurants add ten percent service.
When the weather turns in Hong Kong
Rain here arrives with a signal system: an amber rainstorm warning is a nuisance, while black rain or typhoon signal 8 closes offices, shops and ferries outright and you simply stay indoors. Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui runs 700 metres of shops along the waterfront, and Central's elevated walkways link IFC to Admiralty without a street crossing. The free government museums and Tai Kwun cover the rest.
What things cost in Hong Kong
The Star Ferry costs under six dollars, making it the cheapest thing in the city. MTR rides land between five and fifteen. A cha chaan teng set lunch runs fifty to eighty dollars while dim sum is nearer one hundred and fifty a head. Bars charge sixty to a hundred for a pint, which is where budgets actually break. The government museums are free.
