What first-timers get wrong in Las Vegas

Resort fees are the ambush: Aria, Bellagio, Caesars Palace, Wynn and Venetian each add roughly $55 a night before tax on top of the room rate you booked. Most Strip properties now charge for self-parking too. Taxi drivers leaving Harry Reid may long-haul through the airport tunnel, so ask for surface streets. Free drinks only appear while you are actively playing, and dealers expect a tip.

What's actually worth your time in Las Vegas

Bellagio's fountains and its seasonal Conservatory cost nothing and remain the best free hours on the Strip. The Sphere's interior screen has no real equivalent anywhere, with tickets starting near $110. High Roller and the observation decks are photo stops carrying a markup. Red Rock Canyon's thirteen-mile scenic loop is twenty minutes west of the Strip and requires a timed entry reservation for most of the year.

Las Vegas's museums, and which one to pick

The Neon Museum's boneyard is the one to book, an open lot of salvaged casino signs behind the rescued La Concha lobby, $25 by day and $35 after dark when some signs are relit. The Mob Museum occupies the former federal courthouse where the 1950 Kefauver hearings actually sat. The National Atomic Testing Museum documents the Nevada Test Site sixty-five miles north, including footage of the above-ground shots.

Las Vegas with kids, realistically

Under-21s cannot linger on casino floors, so crossing a resort with children means following marked corridors and moving briskly. The Adventuredome at Circus Circus is indoor and air-conditioned, Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay is worth an hour, and the Discovery Children's Museum downtown suits under-tens. Distances deceive badly here: the walk between two adjacent Strip hotels can take twenty-five minutes through shopping arcades.

When the weather turns in Las Vegas

Rain is rare and dramatic, because the valley's desert washes flood within minutes and Strip underpasses fill fast. Fortunately the city is built to be indoors: the Forum Shops, Grand Canal Shoppes and the Aria to Bellagio chain connect by covered walkway and tram, so you can cross a mile without stepping outside. Summer heat above 40C in July drives people indoors far more often than weather does.

The month to avoid is July — around 42°C (108°F) with roughly 1 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: April is the sweet spot, July the month most people skip.
