What things cost in Lyon
Transport is modest by French standards at 2.10 euros a single, 6.90 for 24 hours and 20.50 for ten journeys. A bouchon lunch menu runs 20 to 26 euros and dinner 30 to 40 with wine served in a heavy-bottomed pot lyonnais. Museum entry sits in the low teens. Lyon after dark
Drinking happens on the water. The peniches, converted barges moored along the Rhone quays between Guillotiere and Part-Dieu, are the summer default. Parc de la Tete d'Or is free, covers more than a hundred hectares and contains a zoo, a boating lake and a botanical garden, which is unusually generous for a city park. The two funiculars up to Fourviere count as rides in their own right. Guignol, the puppet, was invented here and small theatres still stage him. Confluences is designed for children.
When the weather turns in Lyon
The traboules were built so silk could cross the city without getting wet, which makes a mapped traboule route a genuinely appropriate rainy walk. Beyond that, the Musee des Beaux-Arts absorbs half a day, Les Halles Paul Bocuse is covered eating, and the Confluence shopping centre and aquarium sit at the southern tip. Metro line D is driverless and dry.
