What's actually worth your time in Madeira

Official PR trails now need a slot booked through the SIMplifica portal, 4,50 euro on most routes and 10,50 on the Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo ridge, with a thirty-minute arrival window. Cabo Girao's glass skywalk over a 580-metre sea cliff is free and takes a quarter of an hour. Fanal's laurel trees look best wrapped in fog, which inverts the usual advice.

Madeira's museums, and which one to pick

Funchal's museums are modest and very specific. Blandy's Wine Lodge, in a former Franciscan convent on Avenida Arriaga, runs tastings through casks of Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malmsey. The CR7 museum keeps Cristiano Ronaldo's trophies a short walk from where he grew up in Santo Antonio. The Museu de Arte Sacra holds Flemish panels bought with fifteenth-century sugar money.

Madeira after dark

Funchal's evening is contained and early by Mediterranean standards. The old town's Rua de Santa Maria, its doorways painted by artists since 2010, lines up bars and restaurants until around one. The Lido hotel zone stays quieter still. The genuine spectacle is New Year's Eve, when the whole amphitheatre of the bay fires at once and the harbour fills with ships booked a year ahead.

What to eat in Madeira

Espetada is beef threaded onto a bay-laurel branch and hung over the table to drip. Bolo do caco, a flat sweet-potato bread, comes split and soaked in garlic butter before you have ordered anything. Black scabbard fish is fried with banana and passion fruit, which sounds wrong and is not. Mercado dos Lavradores sells all of it, and poncha is stirred with a wooden mexelote.

Madeira with kids, realistically

The Monte cable car costs 22 euro return and 16 one way, with under-sevens free, and the trick is to ride up then come down by carro de cesto, the wicker toboggan steered by two men in straw hats, for a little over 20. The island has almost no natural sand, so Porto Moniz's volcanic rock pools and the Porto Santo ferry are the swimming answers.

When to go to Madeira

The month to avoid is December — around 9°C (48°F) with roughly 20 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: August is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
