What's actually worth your time in Amsterdam

The canal ring is the attraction, and walking the Jordaan or the Nine Streets beats any boat tour. The Anne Frank House is the one ticket that must be bought online weeks ahead and timed to the minute, since there is no door queue whatsoever. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum both justify their 25 euros. Skip the Heineken Experience; the Begijnhof courtyard costs nothing and stays quiet.

Amsterdam after dark

Brown cafes, dark and wood-panelled and often centuries old, are the default evening and close around 01:00 on weekdays, 03:00 at weekends. Paradiso and Melkweg run clubs out of a converted church and a former dairy. NDSM and Noord across the IJ hold the late warehouse venues, reached by a free ferry that runs all night. Cannabis is tolerated in licensed coffeeshops, and smoking it outdoors in the centre now draws a fine.

Amsterdam's museums, and which one to pick

The Rijksmuseum's Gallery of Honour holds Vermeer's Milkmaid and Rembrandt's Night Watch, the latter still under public restoration inside a glass case. The Van Gogh Museum runs chronologically over four floors and sells out days in advance. The Stedelijk covers modern art and design. Smaller and worth the detour: Museum Het Rembrandthuis and the Willet-Holthuysen canal house. A Museumkaart repays itself in about three visits.

Amsterdam with kids, realistically

Amsterdam works well with children provided you respect the bikes. NEMO Science Museum's stepped roof doubles as a free public terrace, Artis Royal Zoo includes an aquarium and planetarium, and the Vondelpark has playgrounds and a paddling area. Canal-house stairs are famously steep and narrow. Strollers board trams through the middle doors. Watch bike lanes constantly, because cyclists hold right of way and will not slow down.

When the weather turns in Amsterdam

Rain here is fine, horizontal and frequent, and residents simply cycle through it. Indoors, the big three museums fill a day, while H'ART Museum in the old Hermitage building runs rotating international loans. Foodhallen in Oud-West is a covered market hall. Canal cruises are glass-roofed and genuinely better in bad weather. Bring a proper coat rather than an umbrella, which canal-side wind destroys within minutes.

The month to avoid is January — around 7°C (45°F) with roughly 14 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: June is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
