What's actually worth your time in Paris
Notre-Dame reopened in December 2024 and entry to the nave is still free, though the timed-slot queue is long, so reserve the free slot through the cathedral app. The Eiffel Tower summit is the upgrade actually worth buying, while the second floor satisfies most people. Sacre-Coeur's dome climb beats the basilica interior. The Champs-Elysees is a shopping street, but the Arc de Triomphe roof earns its fee.
Paris after dark
Paris nightlife is neighbourhood-shaped: Oberkampf and rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud for bars, Pigalle for cocktails and small clubs, the Canal Saint-Martin quays for drinking outdoors in summer, Belleville for cheap and loud. Metro lines stop around 01:15 on weeknights and 02:15 on Friday and Saturday, after which Noctilien night buses take over. Clubs such as Rex fill after midnight, and arriving before then marks you out.
Paris's museums, and which one to pick
The Louvre closes Tuesdays and, since January 2026, charges 22 euros for EEA residents against 32 euros for everyone else, its first nationality-based pricing. Free entry falls on the first Friday of each month after 18:00, excluding July and August. The Musee d'Orsay is free on first Sundays, but since March 2026 every visitor, free entries included, must hold a booked timed slot. Orsay closes Mondays; the Pompidou is shut for a multi-year renovation.
Paris with kids, realistically
The Jardin du Luxembourg still rents wooden sailboats to push around the basin with a stick, and its puppet theatre plays Wednesdays and weekends. The Cite des Sciences at La Villette has a dedicated under-fives zone. Only line 14 is fully step-free, and most Metro stations have stairs and no lift, so travelling with a pushchair means using buses, which are entirely low-floor across the network.
When the weather turns in Paris
Paris drizzle is persistent rather than dramatic. The covered passages, Galerie Vivienne, Passage des Panoramas and Passage Jouffroy, chain together a dry hour near the Grands Boulevards. The Galeries Lafayette dome, the Bourse de Commerce under its glass rotunda, and the Grande Galerie de l'Evolution at the Jardin des Plantes all deliver. Save Sainte-Chapelle for a bright day, since its glass needs direct sun.
