What's actually worth your time in Udaipur

The City Palace is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan and takes two hours; buy the museum ticket and skip the 500-rupee Crystal Gallery unless glass furniture interests you. Jagdish Temple sits at the top of the palace road and costs nothing. Sajjangarh, the unfinished Monsoon Palace on the ridge, charges vehicle fees on top of entry and is bought for the sunset, not the building.

Udaipur after dark

Udaipur's night is scheduled rather than spontaneous. The Dharohar show empties at eight into rooftops that screen Octopussy, filmed here in 1983, on a nightly loop that has run for decades. Ghats around Ambrai and Lal Ghat fill for the palace floodlights. Bars are largely hotel bars because of state licensing, and most kitchens above the lake stop taking orders around ten-thirty.

Udaipur's museums, and which one to pick

Bagore ki Haveli on Gangaur Ghat is the useful one: eighteenth-century prime-ministerial rooms, a turban gallery and what is billed as the world's largest turban, at 100 rupees for foreign adults. Its Dharohar folk dance and puppet show runs 19:00 to 20:00 nightly with the window opening at 18:15 and a camera charge on top. The vintage car collection near Garden Hotel holds the Maharana's Rolls-Royces.

Udaipur with kids, realistically

A Pichola boat from Rameshwar Ghat, with the stop at Jagmandir island, is the easiest hour with small children and runs on a fixed timetable rather than on demand. Saheliyon ki Bari's fountain gardens cost 50 rupees for foreigners and let them run. City Palace corridors are stepped and crowded, so carriers beat pushchairs. Shilpgram, five kilometres out, has craft demonstrations and camel rides.

When the weather turns in Udaipur

Monsoon is the season Udaipur was built for; the lakes only look like the postcards when Pichola and Fateh Sagar are full, and July downpours are what fill them. The City Palace museum route is almost entirely inside. Bagore ki Haveli's show runs under a covered courtyard. The Crystal Gallery, the vintage car museum and the shops of Hathi Pol are all dry alternatives to a boat that gets cancelled.

When to go to Udaipur

The month to avoid is June — around 35°C (95°F) with roughly 12 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: February is the sweet spot, June the month most people skip.
