What's actually worth your time in Vienna

Schonbrunn sells the State Apartments at 28 euro and a fuller Palace ticket at 38, but the gardens open free from half six in the morning and the walk up to the Gloriette for the view back down the parterre is the best hour there. Stephansdom's south tower is 343 steps and cheaper than the north tower lift. The Prater's Riesenrad has turned since 1897.

Vienna after dark

The Bermuda Triangle behind Schwedenplatz packs bars into a few narrow streets, while the brick arches under the Gurtel railway viaduct house live-music venues like rhiz and Chelsea directly beneath passing trains. Ball season runs January and February in full formal dress and is not a tourist pastiche. Coffee houses stay open late, and occupying a table for hours over one drink is an established right.

Vienna's museums, and which one to pick

The Kunsthistorisches Museum owns the largest Bruegel collection in existence, hung in one room, alongside Vermeer's Art of Painting and a Kunstkammer of Habsburg curiosities; it closes Mondays except during June, July and August. The Belvedere holds Klimt's The Kiss in the Upper palace. The Albertina keeps Durer's Young Hare, and the Leopold has the deepest Schiele holdings anywhere.

Vienna with kids, realistically

Schonbrunn's Tiergarten is the oldest surviving zoo in the world, founded in 1752 as an imperial menagerie, and shares the grounds with a hedge maze and a children's museum in the palace. Haus des Meeres puts an aquarium inside a wartime flak tower with a rooftop terrace. The Technisches Museum is hands-on. The U-Bahn is entirely lift-equipped and trams have low-floor sections.

When the weather turns in Vienna

The coffee house is Vienna's official bad-weather infrastructure, and Central, Sperl and Hawelka all expect you to order one melange and stay for the afternoon with the newspapers. The Kunsthistorisches, the Albertina and the Leopold sit within a few minutes of each other around the Ring. Therme Wien is the largest thermal bath inside any European city and is reachable on the U1.

When to go to Vienna

The month to avoid is December — around 5°C (41°F) with roughly 11 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: July is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
