Fares jumped sharply in January 2026: a single is now 3.20 euro on paper against 3.00 bought digitally, and the 24-hour Vienna ticket is 10.20, so the app saves around five percent on everything. There are no barriers, but inspectors work the U-Bahn and fine hard. Tap water is charged for. Say the rounded-up total when handing over payment rather than leaving coins behind.

What to eat in Vienna

Schonbrunn's Tiergarten is the oldest surviving zoo in the world, founded in 1752 as an imperial menagerie, and shares the grounds with a hedge maze and a children's museum in the palace. Haus des Meeres puts an aquarium inside a wartime flak tower with a rooftop terrace. The Technisches Museum is hands-on. The U-Bahn is entirely lift-equipped and trams have low-floor sections.
When the weather turns in Vienna
The coffee house is Vienna's official bad-weather infrastructure, and Central, Sperl and Hawelka all expect you to order one melange and stay for the afternoon with the newspapers. The Kunsthistorisches, the Albertina and the Leopold sit within a few minutes of each other around the Ring. Therme Wien is the largest thermal bath inside any European city and is reachable on the U1.
