What first-timers get wrong in Matera
Matera is not on the Italian national rail network. Trains come from Bari on the separate Ferrovie Appulo Lucane, whose platforms sit across Piazza Aldo Moro from Bari Centrale, and they do not run on Sundays, when it is buses only. Driving in means the Sassi limited-traffic zone, with fines from eighty euros upward, so leave the car at the Via Saragat lot for about five euros a day.
What's actually worth your time in Matera
The Sassi are two districts, not one: Caveoso keeps its rough cave mouths, Barisano its carved palazzo fronts. Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario rebuilds a 1950s cave household, mule stall included; its eight-euro ticket now also covers the neviera and the Sant'Agostino rupestrian church. The Palombaro Lungo, a cistern hollowed under Piazza Vittorio Veneto, is the surprise nobody plans for. Cripta del Peccato Originale sits twelve kilometres out and admits only booked groups.
Matera with kids, realistically
Count on stairs rather than pavements: the Sassi are a stack of stepped lanes where a pushchair becomes luggage, so bring a carrier or base yourself in the upper town. Cave dwellings land well with children old enough to grasp that a family and a mule shared one room, roughly seven upward. Ape Calessino three-wheelers ferry tired legs between the two Sassi for a few euros a head.
When the weather turns in Matera
Polished limestone steps turn genuinely treacherous once wet, which argues for going underground. The Palombaro Lungo, MUSMA's quarried galleries and Casa Noha's projection room are fully enclosed, as are the rupestrian churches of Santa Lucia alle Malve and Santa Maria de Idris, cut into tufa with frescoes intact. Palazzo Lanfranchi, up in the Piano district above the ravine, adds a dry hour of painting.
