The Matera Travel Guide

Your Matera trip, planned — when to go, how many days you need, and where to base yourself, mapped out before you book.

Step 1 · Timing

When to visit Matera

Now in Matera—:—Sunrise—:—Sunset—:—

April–June, September–October are popular times to visit Matera. For planning the trip, timing matters: Golden light on the Sassi and 20-26°C walking weather. August is punishingly hot in the stone; winter is atmospheric but cave hotels get chilly. Deciding your dates first shapes the rest of the plan — how many days to spend and which area to base yourself in.

Warmest in Matera: Jul (34°C / 93°F) · Coolest: Jan (11°C / 52°F) · Wettest: May (~10 rain days)

Step 2 · Trip length

How many days in Matera?

Pick a length and follow a ready-made Matera itinerary — each one sequences the sights so your days flow without backtracking.

Step 3 · Itinerary

Build your Matera itinerary

A good Matera plan bases you in one central area, groups nearby sights into each day, and leaves room to slow down. Start from a day-by-day itinerary above, then adjust the order to your dates and pace.

Step 4 · Your base

Where to base yourself

A central base cuts travel time between sights.

  • Sasso Barisano. Base yourself here: The more restored cave district — most hotels and restaurants.
  • Sasso Caveoso. For your itinerary: Rawer, more ancient-feeling — cave churches and Casa Grotta.
  • Civita. An area to consider: The rocky spur between the two Sassi, crowned by the Duomo.

Step 5 · Transport

Getting around Matera

No mainline station — reach it via Bari (90 min by Ferrovie Appulo Lucane train or bus). A car helps for Alberobello + Puglia combos. Moving between sights: Stay IN the Sassi, not the modern town, for the full effect. Cobbles + stairs everywhere: pack shoes, not wheels.

Step 6 · Your trip

Plan by trip style

  • Family trips. With kids in tow: Kids love that people genuinely lived in caves until the 1950s — Casa Grotta shows exactly how. The ravine walk to the rupestrian churches is a manageable adventure.
  • Couples. Travelling as a pair: Sleep in a candlelit cave suite, dinner in a grotto, and the Sassi lit up at night from the Murgia viewpoint across the ravine.
  • Solo travel. Going solo: Compact and contemplative — two days of stone lanes, cave churches with Byzantine frescoes, and the best bread in Italy.

Step 7 · Before you go

Practical planning

Practical precautions for the trip: Very safe. Watch footing on worn stone stairs, especially after rain. Moving between sights: Stay IN the Sassi, not the modern town, for the full effect. Cobbles + stairs everywhere: pack shoes, not wheels. Work these into the plan early — they affect which neighborhood to base yourself in and how much to fit into each day.

Step 8 · Where to stay
