What first-timers get wrong in Sorrento

The Circumvesuviana is the cheap route to Pompeii and Naples, but it has no luggage racks, no reserved seats and a genuine pickpocket problem in the doorway crush; the Campania Express costs several times more and guarantees a seat. Ferries for Capri sail from Marina Piccola, not Marina Grande, and those harbours are twenty minutes apart. From June to September the Amalfi coast road restricts non-resident cars by odd and even plates.

Sorrento after dark

Evenings run on the passeggiata: Corso Italia closes to traffic and the entire town walks it between roughly seven and eleven, converging on Piazza Tasso for a granita or a spritz under the Fauno awnings. Actual bars gather on Via Fuoro and the alleys off Via San Cesareo, drawing an older, heavily British crowd. The last Circumvesuviana toward Naples leaves in the evening, not at night, quietly capping how late anyone lingers.

Sorrento with kids, realistically

There is almost no sand. Swimming happens off wooden lido platforms bolted into the rocks at Marina Piccola and Marina Grande, entered by ladder, which suits confident swimmers from about seven upward. The public lift down from Villa Comunale to the port spares a long staircase for roughly a euro. Pompeii's basalt paving is punishing on wheels and offers almost no shade, so carriers beat pushchairs on any day trip.

Sorrento's museums, and which one to pick

Museo Correale di Terranova, shut on Mondays, holds what two aristocratic brothers left the town in 1924: Capodimonte and Meissen porcelain, Neapolitan still lifes, inlaid furniture and a belvedere at the far end of the citrus grove. The Museobottega della Tarsialignea explains intarsio, the wood-inlay trade that once filled workshops along Via San Cesareo. Neither is large, and together they fill a single unhurried afternoon rather than a day.

What to eat in Sorrento

Gnocchi alla sorrentina arrive baked in terracotta beneath fior di latte from Agerola, and they are heavier than the name suggests. Provolone del Monaco, aged in the Lattari hills behind town, is the local thing to carry home that is not lemon-flavoured. Delizia al limone, a sponge dome soaked in lemon cream, was invented at nearby Vico Equense in the 1970s. Fish is better at Marina Grande than anywhere on Corso Italia.

When to go to Sorrento

The month to avoid is January — around 13°C (55°F) with roughly 14 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: June is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
