What's actually worth your time in Sorrento

This is a base more than a destination, and its own list is short and largely free. The Villa Comunale terrace hangs over the water, the fourteenth-century cloister of San Francesco carries interlaced arches worth ten minutes, and the Vallone dei Mulini is a flooded gorge where an abandoned flour mill is being swallowed by ferns, visible only from the railing. Bagni della Regina Giovanna rewards the walk out to Capo di Sorrento.

Evenings run on the passeggiata: Corso Italia closes to traffic and the entire town walks it between roughly seven and eleven, converging on Piazza Tasso for a granita or a spritz under the Fauno awnings. Actual bars gather on Via Fuoro and the alleys off Via San Cesareo, drawing an older, heavily British crowd. The last Circumvesuviana toward Naples leaves in the evening, not at night, quietly capping how late anyone lingers.

What things cost in Sorrento

An espresso taken standing at the counter is a little over a euro; the same coffee at a Piazza Tasso table costs several times that, plus a two to three euro coperto per person. Gnocchi alla sorrentina runs twelve to fifteen euro. The train to Naples is under five. A sunbed and umbrella on a Marina Piccola lido platform reaches roughly twenty-five euro a day at the height of August.

Sorrento's museums, and which one to pick

Museo Correale di Terranova, shut on Mondays, holds what two aristocratic brothers left the town in 1924: Capodimonte and Meissen porcelain, Neapolitan still lifes, inlaid furniture and a belvedere at the far end of the citrus grove. The Museobottega della Tarsialignea explains intarsio, the wood-inlay trade that once filled workshops along Via San Cesareo. Neither is large, and together they fill a single unhurried afternoon rather than a day.

What to eat in Sorrento

Gnocchi alla sorrentina arrive baked in terracotta beneath fior di latte from Agerola, and they are heavier than the name suggests. Provolone del Monaco, aged in the Lattari hills behind town, is the local thing to carry home that is not lemon-flavoured. Delizia al limone, a sponge dome soaked in lemon cream, was invented at nearby Vico Equense in the 1970s. Fish is better at Marina Grande than anywhere on Corso Italia.

When to go to Sorrento

The month to avoid is January — around 13°C (55°F) with roughly 14 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: June is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
