El Morro on the headland and the larger San Cristóbal share one ten-dollar National Park Service ticket valid a full 24 hours, and both booths take cards only. Walk Old San Juan's blue adoquín cobbles, cast from furnace slag and carried as ship ballast, early, before the cruise ships unload. The paid trolleys are unnecessary in a grid seven blocks across, and La Perla is residential, not an attraction.
What to eat in San Juan
Mofongo, green plantain pounded with garlic and crackling in a wooden pilón, is the plate, and the roadside kiosks strung along Piñones do a cheaper and often better version beside alcapurrias of green banana and yautía fried to order. This is US territory: dollars, no passport for Americans, no roaming charges, and tipping at fifteen to twenty per cent expected exactly as it is stateside.

The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico on Avenida De Diego holds five centuries of island painting, Campeche and Oller included, opening Wednesday to Sunday, dark Monday and Tuesday, running until eight on Thursdays, with a sculpture garden that is free daily. Museo de las Américas fills the Ballajá barracks beside El Morro. The contemporary art museum occupies a Georgian-revival former school in Santurce.
