El Morro on the headland and the larger San Cristóbal share one ten-dollar National Park Service ticket valid a full 24 hours, and both booths take cards only. Walk Old San Juan's blue adoquín cobbles, cast from furnace slag and carried as ship ballast, early, before the cruise ships unload. The paid trolleys are unnecessary in a grid seven blocks across, and La Perla is residential, not an attraction.
What first-timers get wrong in San Juan
The Tren Urbano has been fare-free since 2024, but it reaches neither Old San Juan nor the airport, so it solves almost nothing for a visitor. AMA buses cost 75 cents and keep loose schedules. This is US territory: dollars, no passport for Americans, no roaming charges, and tipping at fifteen to twenty per cent expected exactly as it is stateside.

Condado and Isla Verde offer calmer swimming, while Ocean Park's north-coast surf does not suit small children.

Hurricane season spans June to November; the rest of the year rain means a hard twenty-minute shower rather than a lost day. For a properly wet one, the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, the Ballajá barracks museums and the Casa Bacardí distillery tour across the bay in Cataño are all under roof.
