Walk the Bund at half past six in the morning, before the crowds and the tour flags, and it costs nothing. The metro is signed in English and the cheapest way across town, though Lines 1 and 2 at rush hour are worth avoiding. Taxi drivers rarely read English addresses, so show Chinese characters. Nanjing Road's fake-goods touts with laminated cards are constant.

Shanghai Museum East in Pudong is free and has taken individual walk-ins without reservation since September 2024, with bronzes and ceramics galleries of national standard. Power Station of Art, a converted 1897 power plant on the Huangpu, shows contemporary work with most exhibitions free and specials around ¥20. M50 on Moganshan Road is a working gallery cluster inside old mill buildings.
