What's actually worth your time in Shanghai
Walk the Bund at half past six in the morning, before the crowds and the tour flags, and it costs nothing. Yu Garden charges ¥50 for a Ming rock-and-pond garden hemmed in by a bazaar that is not actually part of it. The Shanghai Tower deck is very high and often inside cloud. The French Concession's plane-tree streets around Wukang Road need no ticket.
Shanghai after dark
Shanghai runs later than any other Chinese city. Bund rooftops sell the view at a premium, while Julu Road and the lanes off Yongkang carry the neighbourhood bars, some open until four. Street drinking around Yongkang was curbed years ago but the area survived it. Metro service ends near eleven, so Didi is the way home and it is genuinely cheap.
What things cost in Shanghai
The metro charges ¥3 for the first six kilometres and adds ¥1 per ten thereafter. A bowl of noodles costs ¥18 to 30, and a basket of xiaolongbao at Jia Jia around ¥30. Yu Garden is ¥50 while Shanghai Museum East is free. A Didi across the centre runs ¥25 to 50. Bund craft beer can hit ¥90 against ¥40 in a lane bar.
Shanghai's museums, and which one to pick
Shanghai Museum East in Pudong is free and has taken individual walk-ins without reservation since September 2024, with bronzes and ceramics galleries of national standard. Power Station of Art, a converted 1897 power plant on the Huangpu, shows contemporary work with most exhibitions free and specials around ¥20. M50 on Moganshan Road is a working gallery cluster inside old mill buildings.
What to eat in Shanghai
Xiaolongbao is the local test: Jia Jia Tang Bao near People's Square sells out by afternoon, while Din Tai Fung is the dependable version. Shengjianbao, the thicker pan-fried cousin, belongs at Yang's. Then there is hongshao rou red-braised pork, scallion oil noodles, and hairy crab through October and November. The Jing'an lanes still hide breakfast carts turning out cong you bing.
