Where to stay in Dubai
Dubai’s lodging decision is a which-stretch decision: the sights cluster in Downtown, the beach life in the Marina/JBR and on the Palm, and the budget rooms and souk atmosphere in Old Dubai — and those areas are 20–45 minutes apart, not adjacent. The Metro Red Line links Downtown, the Marina and the airport well, so a base near a station keeps the whole city reachable; the Palm and the Jumeirah beach stretch rely on taxis. Dubai Marina & JBR

Vibe: Resort-urban, buzzy evenings, waterfront
Trade-off: A 25–40 minute Metro or taxi ride from Downtown and Old Dubai — commit to the beach end of the city.
Palm Jumeirah
Higher pricesBest for: Resort travelers who plan to stay put — private beaches, pools and Atlantis on the doorstep
Vibe: Secluded, five-star, self-contained
Trade-off: Beautiful but isolated: everything off-island is a taxi ride, and there’s no Metro on the Palm itself.
Deira & Bur Dubai (Old Dubai)
Budget pricesBest for: Budget travelers and anyone who wants souks, the creek and street food over towers
Vibe: Dense, older, genuinely lived-in
Trade-off: Rooms are older and simpler, many hotels are unlicensed (dry), and the beach districts are a long ride away.
Business Bay

Vibe: New towers, canal-side, business-flavoured
Trade-off: Little street life of its own — it’s a launchpad for Downtown rather than a destination.

Vibe: Residential, villa-lined, laid-back
Trade-off: No Metro along the coast road — you’ll taxi or drive everywhere, including to the big sights.
Hotel or holiday home?
Choose a hotel when…
- You want a pool, breakfast and a licensed bar or restaurant in the building — especially in summer, when you’ll live around the hotel by day.
- You’re on a short sights-and-beach trip and would rather have daily housekeeping than a kitchen.
- You want a beach-club or resort experience on the Palm, JBR or the Jumeirah coast.
Choose a holiday home when…
- You’re a family or group wanting a Marina, Downtown or Business Bay tower apartment with a kitchen, laundry and more space per dirham.
- You’re staying a week or more and want to self-cater some meals in a city where restaurant bills add up.
- You’re comfortable checking that a listing shows its DET holiday-home permit number before booking — legal supply here is large, but the check is on you.
