What's actually worth your time in Kathmandu

Kathmandu Durbar Square costs NPR 1,000 for foreigners and still carries earthquake scaffolding a decade on, though the Kumari Ghar and the living goddess appearances justify it. Boudhanath, at NPR 400, is the better single ticket: one enormous stupa, a circumambulating crowd at dusk, rooftop cafes above it. Swayambhunath rewards the stair climb. At Pashupatinath, NPR 1,000 buys only the riverbank view of the cremation ghats, since non-Hindus cannot enter the main temple.

Kathmandu after dark

Thamel is effectively the whole of it, with live cover bands, momo joints and rooftop bars clustered around Chaksibari Marg. A long-standing municipal rule pushes closing towards midnight and Thamel largely honours it, so evenings begin early. Power cuts are much rarer than a decade ago, though generators still cut in. Outside Thamel and a handful of Jhamsikhel bars in Patan, the city is dark by ten.

What things cost in Kathmandu

Ten buff momos cost NPR 150 to 250 and a Thakali set NPR 400 to 600. Heritage entry is the real expense: NPR 1,000 for Kathmandu Durbar Square, NPR 1,800 for Bhaktapur, NPR 400 for Boudhanath and NPR 1,000 for Pashupatinath. A taxi across town negotiates down to NPR 400 to 600. Everest scenic flights sit around USD 200 to 250.

Kathmandu's museums, and which one to pick

Patan Museum, inside the old royal palace on Patan Durbar Square, is the finest in Nepal, explaining Newar bronze and repousse metalwork properly inside a restored courtyard building and included in the square's ticket. The National Museum at Chhauni holds the arms collection and Licchavi stone sculpture. Narayanhiti Palace Museum preserves the rooms where the 2001 royal massacre happened, and closes Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

What to eat in Kathmandu

Momos anchor the city, steamed or fried and dunked in jhol achar, with the buff versions at cheaper Thamel joints more authentic than chicken. Newari cooking is the genuine find: samay baji, chatamari and bara, best around Patan or out in Kirtipur. A Thakali set, with dal, bhat, gundruk and pickle on a compartmented tray, is the best-value full meal. Lassi shops crowd Ason Tole.

When to go to Kathmandu

The month to avoid is May — around 25°C (77°F) with roughly 25 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: December is the sweet spot, May the month most people skip.
