What's actually worth your time in Lucerne

The Kapellbrucke dates from 1333 but burned in August 1993, and only about thirty of its 147 painted gable panels survived, with the charred ones deliberately left in place. Musegg Wall towers are free to climb from spring through autumn, and the Zyt tower's 1535 clock is permitted to strike a minute before every other clock in the city. The Lion Monument takes four minutes and deserves them.

A town of 80,000 behaves like one after eleven, and Rathaus Brauerei beneath the town-hall arcade plus the bars of the Bruch quarter are largely the extent of it. Five minutes from the station at Pilatusstrasse 10, the Rosengart hangs roughly 300 works with Picasso and Klee at its core, and it opens every day. Bourbaki Panorama wraps a 112-metre circular painting around a single room.

What to eat in Lucerne

Chugelipastete is the Lucerne plate, a puff-pastry case filled with veal, mushrooms and cream sauce, and Wirtshaus Galliker has served it to the same families for generations. Alplermagronen combines macaroni and potato with cheese and a spoonful of apple sauce, which sounds wrong and is not. Fondue belongs to winter, so ordering it in July marks you. Markets line the Reuss Tuesday and Saturday mornings.

The month to avoid is December — around 6°C (43°F) with roughly 17 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
