What's actually worth your time in Lucerne

The Kapellbrucke dates from 1333 but burned in August 1993, and only about thirty of its 147 painted gable panels survived, with the charred ones deliberately left in place. Musegg Wall towers are free to climb from spring through autumn, and the Zyt tower's 1535 clock is permitted to strike a minute before every other clock in the city. The Lion Monument takes four minutes and deserves them.

Lucerne's museums, and which one to pick

The Verkehrshaus beside the lake is the most-visited museum in Switzerland, at CHF 37 for the halls with the planetarium and film theatre CHF 18 each on top. Five minutes from the station at Pilatusstrasse 10, the Rosengart hangs roughly 300 works with Picasso and Klee at its core, and it opens every day. Bourbaki Panorama wraps a 112-metre circular painting around a single room.

What first-timers get wrong in Lucerne

Check the summit webcams before buying any Pilatus or Rigi ticket, since paying upwards of CHF 70 to stand inside a cloud is the standard Lucerne regret. Your hotel should hand over a guest card making city buses free, so ask if it does not. Service is already priced in, making tips beyond rounding up unnecessary. Trains depart to the second rather than the minute.

When the weather turns in Lucerne

Both wooden bridges are roofed, so the Reuss can be crossed dry, and the Spreuerbrucke's ceiling carries Kaspar Meglinger's seventeenth-century Dance of Death panels, which reward slow looking anyway. The Rosengart opens daily, Mondays included. The Glacier Garden keeps its Alhambra mirror maze under cover. And in cloud there is no point paying for Pilatus, because the summit sees nothing at all.

What things cost in Lucerne

Swiss pricing is the genuine shock: half a litre of beer costs CHF 7 to 9, a restaurant main CHF 30 to 40, and a coffee around CHF 5. The Verkehrshaus is CHF 37 before you add the planetarium, and a Pilatus round trip runs well past CHF 100. Migros and Coop serve a decent hot lunch for CHF 12 to 15, and public fountains give free drinking water.

When to go to Lucerne

The month to avoid is December — around 6°C (43°F) with roughly 17 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
