What's actually worth your time in Lake Como

The lake is the attraction and the ferry is the way to see it. Bellagio's stepped lanes and Varenna's lakeside walkway are the two set pieces; Como city adds a striped Gothic cathedral and the Tempio Voltiano, a rotunda holding Alessandro Volta's original apparatus. The Como-Brunate funicular lifts you to a ridge view for €3.60 one way and €7.20 return.

What first-timers get wrong in Lake Como

Check closing days before committing a morning: Villa del Balbianello shuts Mondays and Wednesdays, and reaching it means a 25-minute walk from Lenno or a paid taxi-boat. Ferries come in slow and fast versions at different fares, the slow ones stopping everywhere. Driving the narrow western shore road between Como and Menaggio in July or August is a slow, expensive mistake.

What to eat in Lake Como

This is freshwater cooking and nothing like the coast. Missoltini are shad sun-dried, pressed into tins, then grilled and dressed with vinegar over polenta. Risotto con pesce persico uses lake perch fried in butter and sage. Polenta uncia arrives heavy with butter and cheese. Look one street inland at Varenna or Lezzeno, because the Bellagio waterfront often will not serve any of it.

Lake Como's museums, and which one to pick

Gardens here outrank galleries. Villa Carlotta couples a botanical park of azaleas and rhododendrons with Hayez's Last Kiss of Romeo and Juliet indoors, at €17.50 for adults and a main season running late March to mid-October. Villa del Balbianello, familiar from Star Wars and Casino Royale, charges €13 for the gardens or €22 including a guided tour of the villa interior.

Lake Como after dark

Plan for dinner rather than a night out. Villages empty when the last ferries stop, which in winter can mean mid-afternoon and in summer around nine or ten, and Bellagio effectively closes alongside them. Como city is the exception, with a student population, bars clustered around Piazza San Fedele, and lakefront places that run past midnight through the season.
