When the weather turns in Grindelwald

The Sportzentrum covers an indoor pool, a climbing wall and a year-round ice rink, with the guest card halving the swim price. Truemmelbach Falls over in Lauterbrunnen sends ten glacier-fed cascades roaring inside the mountain, reached by tunnel lift, so rain is irrelevant once you are through the door, though it is cold, loud and permanently misted. Interlaken is half an hour away for shops and the St. Beatus caves.

Grindelwald's museums, and which one to pick

This is not a museum town, and pretending otherwise wastes an afternoon. The Grindelwald Museum on Dorfstrasse is one modest building of valley history covering early tourism, the glacier ice once cut and sold to lowland breweries, and the first Eiger ascents; it opens limited afternoons outside high season. Closest to a curated exhibit is the Alpine Sensation tunnel and Ice Palace hollowed into glacier ice at Jungfraujoch, both fare-included.

What to eat in Grindelwald

Alplermagronen, macaroni and potato bound in cream and mountain cheese with apple sauce spooned alongside, is the honest local plate rather than fondue. Meringues under thick double cream come from Meiringen half an hour down the valley, and every bakery here sells them. Kaeseschnitte, a slab of bread drowned in melted cheese, is the standard lunch at Bort and First. The village Coop remains the only genuinely cheap dinner in Grindelwald.

What's actually worth your time in Grindelwald

The Eiger's north wall costs nothing and fills the whole valley window. First's cliff walk and the Bachalpsee hike beyond it are what most visitors actually enjoy, while the Jungfraujoch is the expensive gamble: in cloud you pay well over two hundred francs to stand inside a tunnel, so check the summit webcam first. The Gletscherschlucht gorge walkway, twenty minutes below the village, is the low-effort substitute on a poor day.

Grindelwald after dark

In winter the drinking follows the lifts downhill: the Avocado Bar and the tipi tent near the Maennlichen valley station fill from four and thin out by ten. Summer is quieter again, hotel terraces along Dorfstrasse closing around eleven with no club worth the word. The last train up to Kleine Scheidegg and the last bus back to the Terminal both run early enough to shape the whole evening.

When to go to Grindelwald

The month to avoid is January — around 4°C (39°F) with roughly 15 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: September is the sweet spot, January the month most people skip.
