When the weather turns in Victoria Falls

Rain is not really the problem here; spray is. From February to May the falls generate a permanent downpour over the rainforest path, and the answer is a poncho, sandals and a dry bag for the phone. Genuine wet-season storms arrive as short afternoon thunder between November and March. The Field Museum, the craft village and lodge decks above the Zambezi are the dry options.

Victoria Falls's museums, and which one to pick

There is not much museum culture in a town this size. The Field Museum sits inside the national park near the Livingstone statue and explains how the Zambezi cut eight successive gorges through basalt before settling here. The Railway Museum by the station keeps colonial-era rolling stock in varying states of decay. Elephant's Walk in town is a working artists' village rather than a collection.

What to eat in Victoria Falls

Game meat is the local speciality, and The Boma serves warthog, crocodile and impala as a buffet with drumming at a fixed price near 44 dollars. Sadza, the maize staple, comes with relish at local eateries off the tourist strip. The Lookout Cafe is built over the Batoka Gorge and charges for the view. Mama Africa on Livingstone Way cooks Zimbabwean food without the show.

What's actually worth your time in Victoria Falls

The falls are the attraction, and the Zimbabwean side holds roughly three-quarters of the frontage with sixteen viewpoints along the rainforest path; foreign adults pay 50 US dollars against 20 on the Zambian side. Water peaks around March and April, when spray hides everything, and drops through September and October, when you see bare rock. Devil's Pool is Zambian only. The bridge bungee is 111 metres.

Victoria Falls after dark

This is a small town running on early safari starts, so the nights are short. Drinking happens at lodge bars, at Shoestrings backpackers on West Drive and at the Three Monkeys in the centre. Sunset cruises on the Zambezi, two hours with an open bar, substitute for a night out. After dark elephants and buffalo do walk the roads, which is why lodges run guest transfers.

When to go to Victoria Falls

The month to avoid is December — around 31°C (88°F) with roughly 18 rain days. Prices and crowds track the weather here: May is the sweet spot, December the month most people skip.
