What first-timers get wrong in Cape Town
Nobody pumps their own petrol here; an attendant does it and expects ten or twenty rand, and car guards in reflective vests want something similar for watching your parked car. Book Robben Island days ahead, because the ferry sells out and cancels in swell. Load shedding has eased but not vanished, so ask your guesthouse about backup power. Never leave a bag visible in a car.

What to eat in Cape Town
A Gatsby is a long roll packed with chips, masala steak and atchar, invented on the Cape Flats and cut into four; Golden Dish and the Athlone takeaways are the reference versions, not the waterfront imitations. Cape Town after dark
Bree Street is where the city actually eats and drinks now, a strip of wine bars and small kitchens that mostly stop serving by eleven on weeknights. Long Street still runs later and rougher, aimed squarely at backpackers, while Observatory keeps the student pubs. Before any of it comes the ritual of sundowners on Signal Hill, timed to a midsummer sunset that lands close to eight.
