What first-timers get wrong in Cape Town
Nobody pumps their own petrol here; an attendant does it and expects ten or twenty rand, and car guards in reflective vests want something similar for watching your parked car. Book Robben Island days ahead, because the ferry sells out and cancels in swell. Load shedding has eased but not vanished, so ask your guesthouse about backup power. Never leave a bag visible in a car.
What's actually worth your time in Cape Town
The cableway up Table Mountain is R475 return booked online against R530 at the kiosk, and it shuts on wind far more often than visitors expect, so check the live page before driving out. Platteklip Gorge is the free way up and takes roughly two hours. Boulders Beach genuinely delivers penguins at arm's length. Bo-Kaap's painted houses are a photo stop and also somebody's front door.
What things cost in Cape Town
Restaurant mains on Bree Street land between R180 and R280, and a bottle from a Stellenbosch producer costs less on the list here than a glass would in London. A Gatsby, around R150, feeds three or four people. Uber across the City Bowl is usually R70 to R130. Table Mountain's return cableway ticket is R475 online. A cellar tasting typically runs R100 to R200.
Cape Town with kids, realistically
Water temperature decides the beach: False Bay at Muizenberg and Fish Hoek is swimmable, while Camps Bay and Clifton on the Atlantic side sit near thirteen degrees and children last minutes. Kirstenbosch's Boomslang canopy walkway is a real thrill from about six upward, and Two Oceans Aquarium has a kelp forest tank plus a play deck. The summer southeaster will strip an unpegged towel off the sand.
When the weather turns in Cape Town
Cape Town's wet season is winter, roughly May to August, which reverses what most first visitors to Africa assume. Assume the cableway is shut and rebuild the day indoors: Zeitz MOCAA and the aquarium sit under one Waterfront roof, District Six needs ninety unhurried minutes, and the Constantia cellars at Groot Constantia and Klein Constantia pour tastings in stone rooms whatever the sky is doing.
